New porcelain patio in a Gwynedd garden

Home/Services/Patios & landscaping

Patios and landscaping in Gwynedd and Anglesey

A good patio starts underground. Get the dig, the base and the falls right, and it stays flat and drains properly for years.

Patio builders

Built properly from the ground up.

Get the groundwork wrong and you're looking at puddles and rocking slabs by the second winter. Get it right and the patio still looks good years later.

We lay porcelain, slate and sandstone patios, build garden and retaining walls, and do the groundwork that sits under all of it. Gwynedd Construction Ltd has been building in North Wales as a limited company since 2016.

Dark porcelain patio
01

Porcelain patios

Hard-wearing, easy to clean and very little upkeep. Porcelain resists stains, which makes it a good choice for a busy family garden.

Choose an outdoor-rated, textured finish so it has grip when it's wet.

  • Very low upkeep
  • Clean, modern look
  • Textured finish for grip
Ask about a porcelain patio
Natural slate patio
02

Slate patios

A natural fit for North Wales homes and gardens. Slate is dark, natural and local, and suits cottages and stone houses.

A riven finish gives good grip in wet weather.

  • Local, natural stone
  • Suits cottages and stone houses
  • Good grip with a riven finish
Ask about a slate patio
Warm-coloured sandstone patio
03

Sandstone patios

Warm colours and a traditional look. Sandstone suits traditional gardens and older houses.

It needs sealing and cleaning more often than porcelain, so it's a good choice if you don't mind a little upkeep.

  • Warm, traditional look
  • Good grip
  • Needs a little more care

New rendered garden walls
04

Retaining and garden walls

Plenty of gardens in Gwynedd climb or drop away from the house. A retaining wall turns a slope into a flat patio or lawn you can use.

These walls hold back tonnes of soil, so they need proper footings and drainage behind them. It's building work, not just landscaping.

  • Sloping gardens made level
  • Proper footings and drainage
  • Block, rendered or stone
Ask about a retaining wall

05

Groundwork and drainage

Digging out, levelling and drains, with a mini digger where the job needs it.

This is the part you never see, but it's what stops the patio sinking and the water pooling.

  • Digging out and levelling
  • Drains laid
  • Mini digger where needed

How it works

How we lay a patio

A patio is only as good as what's under it. This is how each one is built.

  1. Plan the levels

The patio must fall away from the house, so rain runs off and not towards your walls.

  2. Dig out

Down to firm ground, with roots and soft soil removed.

  3. Sub-base

Compacted hardcore, the layer that stops the patio sinking.

  4. Lay the slabs

Bedded on mortar and set to the right falls, so nothing rocks or holds water.

  5. Joints and finish

Pointed, cleaned and ready to use.

Choosing a stone

Porcelain, slate or sandstone?

All three make a good patio. The right one depends on your house, your garden and how much upkeep you want:

  • Porcelain: clean and modern, very low upkeep, resists stains.
  • Slate: dark, natural and local, low upkeep, good grip with a riven finish.
  • Sandstone: warm and traditional, needs sealing and cleaning more often.

Not sure which to choose? Ask us at the free visit.

Do I need planning permission?

Not usually for a patio at ground level. Raised terraces and decks are different, so ask us.

Sloping garden?

A retaining wall can turn a slope into a flat, usable space. It needs proper footings and drainage behind it.

Big patio or driveway?

In Wales, building work with a construction area of 100 square metres or more – counting new buildings, extensions, patios and driveways together – needs approval from the council's SuDS Approval Body (SAB) for its drainage before work starts.

Questions

Questions people ask us

Do I need planning permission for a patio?

Not usually for a patio at ground level. Raised terraces and decks are different, so ask us.

Which stone needs the least upkeep?

Porcelain. It resists stains and only needs a wash now and then.

Can you level a sloping garden?

Yes. A retaining wall with proper footings and drainage turns a slope into a flat space you can use.

Do you give free quotes?

Yes. Call 07825 205657 or send the form below, and we'll arrange a free estimate.

Does a big patio need drainage approval?

It can. In Wales, if new hard surfaces and buildings add up to 100 square metres or more, the drainage needs SAB approval from the council before work starts.
